The legendary coach, credited for building one of college football's greatest dynasties in 34 seasons, is expected to be offered a non-coaching position at the school for an unspecified period of time, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
Bowden, 80, who reportedly stated more than once that he wanted to return for the 2010 season, met with school president T.K. Wetherell and athletic director Randy Spetman Monday morning.
Bowden is expected to meet again with Wetherell and Spetman Tuesday to discuss his future with the program.
It is still uncertain if Bowden will coach the bowl game of the Seminoles, who finished the season with a 6-6 record.
Bowden, a Hall of Famer, currently trails only Joe Paterno in total career wins in Division I-FBS.
Bowden has captured two national championships (1993 and 1999) since joining FSU in 1976. He also owns 12 conference titles.
Bowden's decision to retire would push FSU's transition phase with head coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher taking over.
Fisher spent seven seasons with LSU as offensive coordinator before joining the Seminoles in the 2007 in a similar role.
