Cincinnati, Ohio, United States (AHN) - Women taking antidepressants may have trouble lactating after giving birth, according to a new study.

Researchers with the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of California, Davis said in a statement that certain common anti-depression drugs may be linked to a common difficulty experienced by new mothers, called delayed secretory activation. This is a delay in the initiation of full milk secretion.

The scientists say that the body's ability to secrete milk at the right time is closely related to its production and regulation of the hormone serotonin.

Antidepressants like fluoxetine, sertraline and paraxetine are known as selective serotonin inhibitors, and may impact the hormone's regulation in the breast, the researchers said.

The study is published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
