Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Residents of Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states were still recovering Tuesday from the weekend snowstorm that closed schools and clogged roads when the bad news came: more snow was on the way.

The second major storm in less than a week is again targeting the crowded population areas between New York and Washington, D.C., with the Big Apple bracing for up to 18 inches of the white stuff to be delivered under blizzard conditions. The Washington Post labeled the impending blast "snowverkill."

Snow was expected begin falling Tuesday afternoon.

Government offices and public schools in New York have already advised they will be closed on Wednesday. The storm is forecast to blow into the region after midnight Tuesday and intensify tomorrow with winds possibly whipping to 45 miles per hours before letting up Wednesday evening.

Another 20 inches of snow could fall in the Mid-Atlantic region even as roads and sidewalks were still being cleared. In the Washington area, as many as 10,000 homes were believed to still without power.

Some weren't waiting for the storm to arrive. Airlines began cancelling flights Tuesday morning. Road crews in the District of Columbia stepped up efforts to clear streets before new flakes began falling.

Sanitation workers in New York were prepping to venture out Wednesday with more than 1,500 vehicles to plow new snow off the roads. They will work in temperatures not expected to exceed 33 degrees.
