The company cited economic pressures.

After that date, passengers flying coach within the United States or on international flights of two hours or longer to or from Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America will have to pay $8 for a blanket and a pillow or do without.
However, American Airlines has a deal for passengers.
That $8 fee buys a fluffy blue fleece blanket and an inflatable neck pillow in a clear plastic, zippered carry bag that the passenger can take with them. To help sweeten the deal, included in the bag is a $10 off coupon good on a $30 purchase at Bed, Bath and Beyond stores.
Premium class passengers, along with passengers on longer international flights will still find complimentary blankets and pillows available for use during flights.
