Amsterdam, Netherlands (AHN) - Researchers in the Netherlands say they have demonstrated the safety of a possible vaccine against mesothelioma, a lung cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

The drug infuses a patient's own dendritic cells with antigen from the tumor and induces a T-cell response against tumors caused by the disease, the researchers, from the Erasmus Medical Center, said in a statement.

Most developed countries have banned the use of asbestos for decades, but the time between exposure and the diagnosis of mesothelioma can be up to 50 years.

Incidence of the disease is actually expected to rise until 2020. The median survival time after diagnosis is one year.

Most available treatments for the disease improve survival time by about three months, the researchers said.

The study on the potential vaccine is published in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
