Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) released Wednesday a draft of new English and math standards from kindergarten to high school.

The NGA Center and CCSSO invited the public to comment on the draft K-12 standards developed together with teachers, school administrators and experts with the aim of providing a clear and consistent framework to prepare children for college and the workforce.

Under the proposed standards for English, fourth graders are expected to differentiate poetry and prose, including what stanza, verse, rhythm and meter means.

A proposed math standards aimed at boosting eighth-graders' knowledge in algebra is the use of linear equations to solve for an unknown. The students are also expected to explain a proof of the Pythagorean theorem on properties of a triangle.

The plan also lists dozens of classic works that students can read to handle language complexity. For example, E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web" is recommended as a read-aloud book for second- and third-graders while former president Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address is intended for ninth- and 10th-graders.

Public comments on the draft standards are being gathered until April 2.
