The Vow ( **1/2 )This sweet-natured strumming of the heartstrings has an interesting premise: an amnesiac cannot remember her husband. It's a romantic melodrama that tries to make us fall in love with a couple for whom the husband has to try to make his wife fall in love with him all over again. Rachel McAdams stars as a sculptor married to a recording studio owner played by Channing Tatum. When they're involved in a tragic car accident, he suffers a few cuts and bruises, but she ends up in a coma. And when she wakes up, she experiences severe memory loss so extreme, she can't remember anything from the last five years -- including her husband.

Safe House ( ** )This gritty action thriller about corruption is cynical, hard-edged, two-fisted, and only minimally interested in its own subject matter. Denzel Washington stars as the CIA's most dangerous traitor. He's a renegade operative and suspected double agent who has turned, traded secrets with and sold military intelligence to enemies of the United States, and has been on the run for more than a decade. In possible possession of sensitive materials that everybody else in the spy game wants, he gives himself up and is remanded to a CIA-operated safe house in South Africa, where low-level CIA op Ryan Reynolds is in charge and wonders what's being done to Washington there is legal.
